![]() Lavier caught sight of movement off to his right and looked that way just in time to see the other trucker pull the handle of the air horn. They just kept on talking while two lines of traffic waited behind 'em. On his way up to Treverton one day, Lavier was driving in the left lane, alongside a semi in the right lane, and both rigs were second in line behind two cars whose drivers were too absorbed in their lane-to-lane conversation to notice that the traffic light at the main drag had changed from red to green. ![]() In those days (1940s), the truck route through York, Pennsylvania, on our way up to Treverton for loads of coal, went through a couple of narrow one-way, two-lane streets with a narrow sidewalk on the right-hand side, between tall, windowless brick buildings and no parking lane (just two lines of bumper-to-bumper and a sidewalk). One of my summer jobs in high school was as a swamper on my pal Lavier Strickler's truck. He eased his Blazer back until his rear bumper was touching the side of the big car, put the Blazer in 4-WD, and slowly pushed the big car sideways until he had room to turn into line with the traffic lane and drive away. Gene's patience lasted for an admirable number of thousands of ticks 'n' tocks before his red rose above ear level. Gene waited for a while, for the guy to come out from wherever he was, get in his car, and drive away, so Gene could back his Blazer out and be on his way. There was no driver, and the Rolls wasn't running, yet here this big heap sat right in the traffic lane. One night in Jeddah, my pal Gene (Boeing pilot) came out of a souk to drive away but found his Chevy Blazer blocked by some sheik's big fancy car (Rolls Royce or the like) with gold where you'd expect chrome. ![]() and left a variety of interesting looks on the faces of limo passengers and his fellow pedestrians.Īnother shipmate (different occasion) walked over the hood of a car that blocked the crosswalk. Boggy, a shipmate of mine went in one door and out the other door of a limo whose driver had pulled too far forward before he stopped athwart the crosswalk and of course my buddy left both doors of the limo open.
